At the center of Downtown Denver in the Central Business District is16th Street Mall, a mile-long, pedestrian-only street lined with cafes, bars and stores, and condos and lofts. Surrounding this city center are vibrant, historic neighborhoods. At the end of the Mall, Lower Downtown – LoDo for short – is Downtown Denver’s best-known neighborhood. Over 100 of its red-brick warehouses and commercial buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries have been transformed into restaurants, bars, art galleries and lofts. North of LoDo is the Ballpark Historic District, an area with a decidedly historic/industrial feel. It is the home of many funky lofts. Northwest of Downtown across the South Platte River, Highlands has quaint Victorian homes and tree-lined streets. An up-and-coming neighborhood for young professionals and families, this area has boutiques, galleries, and outdoor cafes. Uptown is Denver’s oldest Downtown residential neighborhood. On a hill east of the city center, Uptown has tree-lined boulevards and Victorian and Queen Anne homes mixed with new high-rise condos and lofts. The neighborhood behind the State Capitol is known as Capitol Hill, known for its mansions as well as its neighborhood bars, restaurants and bookshops.
